Whiskey and Coke

Whiskey and Coke

The Whiskey and Coke is a welcomed improvement over the Rum and Coke. The whiskey adds a hint of cedar and the coke provides all the sweetness you need. Feel free to add a squeeze of lime juice, but it’s not necessary. Finish it off with a few lime wedges or wheels to add color and a burst of citrus.

The Whiskey and Coke is as simple as it is delicious. But don’t think because it’s easy to make it shouldn’t be given the respect it deserves. After all, what is a Moscow Mule but simple and easy? Yet no one thinks any less of the beloved ginger cocktail. No, instead think of the Whiskey and Coke as a rugged companion you can easily call upon to refresh yourself after a long day.

Whiskey and Coke Ingredients

The Whiskey and Coke is a basic two-ingredient cocktail. The type and quality of ingredients will certainly affect its flavor. However, this certainly isn’t where you’d use a top-shelf or single-malt spirit. Keep it classy and don’t break the bank.

We’ve all heard of the famous Jack n’ Coke, but the nice thing about the Whiskey and Coke is that you can decide for yourself the whiskey you’d like to use. Jack Daniel’s is a Tennessee whiskey and a fine choice. But don’t limit yourself. You can try a Kentucky bourbon (a personal favorite), Canadian whiskey, Irish Whiskey (i.e. Jameson), rye, or blended. Each has its own unique flavor profile. So if done correctly, you can add an endless array of character to the drink.

The name “coke” refers to the cola made by Coca-Cola, the popular beverage company. But feel free to use any type or brand of cola you like (Coca-Cola, Pepsi, etc.). I prefer Coca-Cola. Specifically Mexican Coke, it’s sweetened with sugarcane instead of high fructose corn syrup, which is what’s most commonly sold in the U.S. Luckily, they’re both sold in most grocery stores so it’s not hard to find. You can easily tell the difference between the two (without checking the label) by how it’s bottled. Mexican Coke is packaged in glass bottles instead of aluminum cans or plastic bottles. I prefer Mexican Coke not because it’s healthier or anything, but because it simply tastes better! Definitely give it a try!
